At the end of her first book, Splintered, author A.G. Howard writes  ‘a very special thanks to Lewis Carroll and Tim Burton’ whose ‘vivid characters and ‘warped dreamscapes’ were her inspiration.

Alyssa Gardner’s great-great-great grandmother was Alice Liddell – the Alice in Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.  Alyssa’s mother is in an asylum and Alyssa is afraid she will suffer a similar fate. She can already hear the thoughts of plants and insects and in her dreams she is Alice, dressed in a blue dress and lacy pinafore. However, the White Rabbit isn’t a cute bunny – he’s Rabid White and, as his name suggests, looks like something out of a nightmare. Alyssa is chased, scratched by thorns, surrounded and caught by a card army and, finally, has her head chopped off.

If Alyssa is to break the family curse and save her mother, she must go down the rabbit hole  to the Wonderland of her nightmares and set right the things that Alice did wrong.

This is a lot darker than the Lewis Carroll original – and more romantic. Alyssa finds herself torn between Jeb, her best friend, and the dangerous and mysterious Morpheus, her guide to Wonderland.
