During a library session, the pupils in one of my classes were asked to talk about the book they had just read. This book was one of those recommended, and I can see why. Although the version I have is over 300 pages long it is actually a quick read – perhaps because there is a lot going on.
Thomas Ward is the seventh son of a seventh son and destined to be a Spook. His mother tells him, “You’ve the gift and the strength to do what has to be done.”
However, Tom isn’t so sure he wants to be a Spook’s apprentice. It’s a lonely and dangerous life.
It’s not long before Tom has made two very serious mistakes, all because he failed to heed the Spook’s warning about village girls with pointy shoes.
If he is to put things right, he must find a way to defeat Mother Malkin, the most dangerous witch in the County.
