General Course Outline
Internal Unit Assessment – NABs
1. Language Study
- ONE Close Reading assessment (at the appropriate level) completed under classroom supervision. A pass mark is 50% of the marks allotted to the paper – usually 15/30.
- ONE piece of writing (Creative or Discursive). Minimum number of words: Higher – 650; Intermediate 2 – 500; Intermediate 1 – 300. Pass/Fail.
2. Literary Study

ONE Textual Analysis (on a previously unseen text – prose, poetry or drama) under classroom supervision. A pass mark is 50% of the marks allottted to the paper – usually 15/30.
(Personal Study - no longer a required part of the course but may be completed as an extra unit.)

Anyone choosing to complete the Personal Study must choose and read a text then write a critical essay on the text under classroom supervision. The assessment lasts for one hour and candidates are allowed two sides of A4 notes and the text with them during the assessment. Pass/Fail.
The External Examination and Writing Folio
Higher

Paper 1: Close Reading (two passages – non-fiction and related by theme) - 1 hour and 45 minutes - 50 marks. (40% of final grade)

Paper 2: Critical Essay (two essays, each from a different genre) – 1 hour and 30 minutes – 25 marks each essay (40% of final grade)

Writing Folio – to be completed before the Easter holidays – 2 pieces of writing -650 – 1300 words . (See Writing Folio page for full details.) (20% of final grade)
Intermediate 2

Paper 1: Close Reading (one passage – non-fiction) - 1 hour - 30 marks. (40% of overall grade)

Paper 2: Critical Essay (two essays, each from a different genre) – 1 hour and 30 minutes – 25 marks each essay (40% of overall grade)
